Not everything has to be so perfect. — Nicki Davigner

Yes it’s true. My girlfriend gave me a piece of advice that little did I know, would change the entire way I view my life. It sounds simple. It sounds like common sense. But is it though?

Throughout our lives we go around idealizing everything and everyone. Whether it be how someone else lives their life, or where they live, or what they do, or how much money they make. It always seems better from the other side, but at the end of the day, everyone struggles with their problems.

To me, idealizing is trying to make things perfect. It’s trying to achieve the unachievable.

So I spent my entire life trying to do this. I’m a perfectionist. It’s in my DNA to achieve the unachievable. And it really hit me the other day.

Since I’ve moved to LA almost 8 months ago (yes, I really moved, read here to learn more), I’ve gone through some serious mood swings. Some days I feel like I’m on the right path & crushing work. Other days, I feel lost and like my only mission in life is to clean, buy plants for my room, and make everything feel perfect when it’s not.

Which brings me to my day yesterday.

Yesterday I woke up in a terrible mood for absolutely no reason. I slept great & was ahead on my work. That terrible mood lasted the entire day.

Aside from working, I spent the entirety of my day working on cleaning my room, bathroom, reorganizing my plants, turning on my essential oil defuser, putting on spa music, making my bed… sounds nice, doesn’t it?

It did at first. Until I had achieved “perfection”. Until I had absolutely nothing else to do.

On a small scale, I achieved the unachievable. And it felt shitty.

And that’s when I realized. My girlfriend was right. Not everything has to be so perfect. Not only does it not need to be, but it shouldn’t be.

Life is about the journey, not the destination.

So much love,

Jonnie
